Silver Gelatin prints are the current name for \ "traditional" Black & White photography, to distinguish them from \ digital prints printed on an ink jet printer. The photographic paper \ is coated with gelatin with light sensitive silver compounds. After \ the paper is exposed to light via an enlarger, the image on the paper \ is developed using a variety of chemical solutions to make the image \ appear and to then make the image permanent.

Ordinarily this would cause the paper to become totally black, \ but the development is carried out in extremely diluted film \ developer, and the paper is then "snatched" from the developer early, \ when it has reached the desired density. Due to the nature of the \ development, which increases exponentially as time goes on, the timing \ of the development is very critical. \ Van Dyke Brown prints, like Cyanotypes, are printed on watercolor paper by coating the paper with a light sensitive \ compound, but VDB prints are silver, rather than iron, based. The paper is contact printed under ultraviolet light \ and developed in slightly acidified water. It is then processed the same as conventional Silver Gelatin prints \ and "fixed" in a solution which removes the unexposed siver, and finally washed for an extended period \ to remove the remaining fixer.\

This is a very involved, time consuming process that results in photographic images with a very different \ look to them than almost any other process. \

Due to the tiny size of the \ hole, the image has nearly infinite depth of field, making the \ foreground and the background always in focus. The smaller the hole, \ the sharper the image will be, but also the exposure time will \ increase, because less light enters the camera. A compromise needs to \ be made between sharpness and length of exposure. My panoramic camera \ uses a pinhole that result in somewhat softer focus for a more \ "painterly" or impressionistic look. The curved film back in the \ camera creates even illumination, so all parts of the negative are \ evenly exposed, and reduces the distortion typically seen with wide \ angle lenses. These images were taken with a single exposure, not \ multiple exposures that are stitched together to make a wide panoramic \ print. I scan the negatives \ and print the images on a gicleé printer using \ archival paper and inks for a print lifetime in excess of 100 years. \

\ For many of us, Cape Cod has an allure that cannot be \ described. Whether it is the beaches, weathered homes, salt air, art \ festivals, or even the quiet seclusion during the "off season", the \ Cape casts a magic over those of us fortunate enough to spend time \ here. I have attempted to show my love of the area through my \ photographs, using different techniques to allow me to discover \ alternate views and see the Cape through different eyes. \

With the requirement of height, they have always been very \ noticeable, and with their placement on high points near the edge of \ the sea, they are typically very picturesque, and have inspired \ artists and photographers alike for many years. \
\ Each lighthouse is different, owing its uniqueness to the topography \ of the area, the residence requirements for the keepers, and local \ architectural styles. Even the lighthouses of Cape Cod, with their \ proximity to one another, are all very different in look and history. \
